Congrats! You’ve survived our first two alphabet soup bowls of deliverability acronyms, jargon, abbreviations and initialisms. You’ve arrived at our final bowl of 22 acronym definitions and should now be well versed in email deliverability jargon.

 
TERM DEFINITION
rDNS A computer network lookup technique that queries DNS to find out the domain name associated with an IP address. An essential DNS record to have for successful email delivery.
RFC Request For Comments - An informational text document that is the result of committee work at the IETF and is intended to solicit comments from the internet community.
RFC 2821 The informational RFC document that updates and defines the workings of SMTP. See https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2821.txt
RFC 2822 The informational RFC document that updates and defines the specifications & format for Internet Messages, commonly called electronic mail or simply email. See https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2822.txt
RFC 4408 The informational RFC document that describes and explains the specs for Sender Policy Framework (SPF) See https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4408.txt
ROI Return On Investment - A calculation of how efficient and profitable an investment is. Email marketing is incredibly popular because of its high ROI.
RSS Really Simple Syndication - A web feed that allows users and apps to fetch updates, news articles and other content from websites. At one time was thought to be the email killer.
SaaS Software as a service - A licensing and delivery model for centrally hosted software.
SMS Short Message Service - Text messaging via cellular phones. Another communication form that coexists with email.
SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - The technology protocol that dictates how email messages are sent and received.
SNDS Smart Network Data Service - A service provided by Microsoft to bulk email senders to monitor and receive metrics on email sent to Microsoft Outlook & Hotmail email addresses.
SORBS Spam and Open Relay Blocking System - A DNS based Email Block List.
SPF Sender Policy Network - An email authentication method that can detect forged sender addresses.
SSL Secure Sockets Layer - A deprecated cryptographic protocol used to encrypt and secure internet messaging.
SURBL (Previously Spam URI RBL) is a collection of URI DNSBL lists of Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) hosts, typically links to web site domains, that appear in spam email.
TINS This Is Not Spam - The percentage of email recipients who mark a message as not spam compared to those that did not and left the message in the spam folder.
TLD Top Level Domain - The part of a domain that is to the right of the dot. Examples: .com | .net | .org
TLS Transport Layer Security - The current cryptographic protocol used to encrypt and secure internet messaging.
TOS Terms of Service - The operating rules one agrees to in order to use a service. ISPs & ESPs typically have TOS agreements that cover email sending and receiving.
UCE Unsolicited Commercial Email aka ‘SPAM.’
UCEPROTECT A Switzerland based blacklist that primarily serves Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Australia and Canada.
WHOIS WHOIS is a TCP-based transaction-oriented query/response protocol that is widely used to provide information services to Internet users. Commonly used to look up the ownership of domain names.
